How to waterproof your boots


Waterproofing your boots is one of the best things you can do to take care of them, from fashion boots, hiking boots, motorcycle boots, etc. But how do you go about it?

When purchasing the boots in-store:

  • Ask the salesclerk what he or she recommends for you as waterproofing products. There are many kinds of products, including oil, wax, silicone, and water-base. Asking the clerk would give you an idea of which kind of products would work for your boot material.
  • Ask the clerk for specific technique to waterproof your boots. Make sure you ask them in detail, such ask whether you should rub the product in, or wait for it to be obsorbed, or just let it air dry.
  • Ask the clerk for the possible side effects the products will cause on your boots, and consider whether you would go for waterproofing them or not.

When purchasing the boots online:

  • Contact the manufacturer (via email, toll-free number, or live-chat, etc.) for answers regard the same questions mentioned above.

Tips:

  • It is recommended that you waterproof your boots before you start wearing them, even if you have purchased a pair of waterproof boots.
  • Don’t forget to get ample the products into the seam area where the sole meets the boot, then work the product into the seam area using a q-tip or a toothbrush.
  • Don’t use rough device when you waterproof your boots as you might damage them.
  • Each time you clean your boots, reapply the waterproof products to maintain your boots condition.

Drying your boots properly

When you forget to waterproof your boots and they get wet, dry them properly to avoid damaging.

  • Wipe off dirt and mug
  • Air dry them in well-circulated indoor area (Don’t leave them in the sun to dry! Don’t use a hair dryer! Don’t use a heater!)
  • Use foot powder or baking soda if they smell after drying
  • Waterproof them so you don’t have to do this again ;)
